Today is the first day of fall. That means that MLB is coming to a close. Paul Skenes (PIT) is pitching today. He's probably the best rookie pitcher this year. Shota Imanaga (CHC) is also pitching. I'm looking for ATL, LAD, and MIL to have a good day.

Saturday - 9/21/2024

Bobby Witt (KC) had 3 H yesterday. That brings his total to 204. NYM plays PHI today. That should be a nice game to watch.

Friday - 9/20/2024

Jacob deGrom (TEX) is starting today. The great had Tommy John surgery last year and has pitched only three innings this season. The future HOF'er Justin Verlander (HOU) is also pitching today.

Thursday - 9/19/2024

From a hitting perspective, the NYM should have a nice game against PHI's Taijuan Walker. Walker is 3-6 with 1.24 Hits per Inning. His ERA is 6.29. Both teams have similar records.

Yes, it's Saturday. I've been out ill, but now I'm back. Bobby Witt (KC) is getting ready to have 200 H. He's at 196. Aaron Judge (NYY) has 52 HR and 130 RBIs. The NYY vs. BOS game will probably be one of the best today. ATL vs LAD won't be bad either.

The other day, I wondered if the catcher position requires more experience and if there is a difference in age by position. I thought the typical catcher might be older, and the more "athletic" positions, such as SS and 2B, typically have younger players. So, I ran some statistics, and I was wrong. There doesn't seem to be a difference in age on the field.

How long do pitchers last?

It appears that the majority of MLB pitchers are in the 25-30 year range. This makes sense if you believe athletes peak in the late 20's. But note that 19 pitchers aged 34 and 35 have thrown over 226 innings. There are relatively few pitchers over the page of 35.

In looking at the bullpen pitchers, note that the best pitchers (from a H per Inning perspective) are over 34 years old. This makes sense if you believe that older pitchers make better bullpen pitchers. However, most bullpen pitchers are in their late 20s to early 30s.

Who has the best pitching so far this season?

Starters:

DET and HOU have the best pitching from a H per Inning standpoint. They happen to be lefties. DET's dominant pitcher is Tarik Skubal, who has pitched 160 innings and has a .75 H per Inning. HOU's dominant pitcher is Ronel Blanco, who has pitched 1430 innings and has a .68 H per Inning. Behind Blanco is Framber Vladez, who has 150 innings and a .80 H per Inning.

I'd like to point out the SEA starters. They have an impressive group of right-handers with Miller, Kirby, Gilbert, and Castillo. (Bryan Woo is starting today, so his name is highlighted.) SEA needs help with hitting.

SEA, NYY, and PHI have the lowest H per Inning for right-handers.

Bullpen:

CLE, MIN, and SEA have the best right-handers. BAL, CLE, and HOU have the best left-handers.

Travel day today. LAD vs BAL is the game to watch today. David Peterson (NYM), who is 8-1, is pitching today. He has a 2.85 ERA.

Wednesday - 8/28/2024

Chris Sale (ATL) is pitching against MIN tonight. That's the game to watch. Both teams are 72-60.

Tuesday - 8/27/2024

Jack Flannery (LAD) is matched up with Cole Irvin (BAL) in my game of the day. (However, it's on a 10:10pm, which is too late for me.) For those who can't stay up with the big dogs, WSH vs NYY at 6:45pm sounds better.

The MVP talk has started. Aaron Judge (NYY), Juan Soto (NYY), and Shohei Ohtani (LAD) are a couple of names discussed. Remember that Ohtani has only pitched once (last night for 10 pitches) this season due to surgery. He's impressive. STL lost Willson Contreras last night due to a broken finger.

All the teams from NYC should have a nice day today. I'm picking the NYM over SD and the NYY over COL. The NYM game should be a good one. SD has a good team, and they play at home.

KC vs PHI is the game to watch. Excellent teams, plus Ranger Suarez (PHI) is pitching. Suarez has a 2.87 ERA with .84 Hits per Inning

Friday - 8/23/2024

KC vs. PHI is the game to watch today. But SD vs. NYM, BOS vs. ARI, and BAL vs. HOU will also be good. Aaron Judge and Juan Soto (NYY) should get a hit against Kyle Freeland (COL).

Thursday - 8/22/2024

Paul Skenes (PIT) is pitching tonight against CIN. Skenes has a 2.30 ERA and is one of the best rookie players this year.

Wednesday - 8/21/2024

WSH should handle COL today. ATL vs PHI will be a good game. Johnny Cueto (LAA) was called up from AAA. He's been in AAA since last fall. He's always entertaining to watch pitching.

Tuesday - 8/20/2024

ATL vs PHI today. That's an excellent game. And 2 decent pitchers on the mount. If you play Beat the Streak, Luis Garcia (WSH) would be a prudent bet.

Monday - 8/19/2024

There are quite a few competitive games today. BAL vs. HOU, SD vs. MIN, and NYM vs. BAL should be entertaining.

Sunday - 8/18/2024

Tarik Skubal (DET) is pitching today. He's 14-3 and may be the best baseball pitcher in the season. Chris Sale (ATL) also has 14 wins. Carlos Rodon (NYY), Grayson Rodriguez (BAL), and Seth Lugo (KC) have 13 wins.

I'd watch the DET vs NYY game today.

I am not a COL hater. It's just that my statistics show that COL has the worst pitching in the league. They have given up the most H with 1206, the most runs with 703, and the highest Hits per Inning with 1.138. They really do need to improve in this area. So, I'm going with ARI over COL today.

My statistics show that SD should beat PIT today. PIT is pretty good, but they are in a slump right now. If you are playing Beat the Streak, go with Luis Arraez (SD).

SF should handle WSH today. Patrick Corbin (WSH) has 1.207 Hits per Inning. Today is a travel day, with only nine games.

Mike Trout (LAD) is out for the season with a meniscus tear. The stats show that MIA will get hammered by ATL. But Shaun Anderson (MIA) has only pitched 5.13 innings. He has a Hits per Inning stat of 3.314. So we'll see.

It's a big travel day today. LAA should beat COL. KC should beat DET.

HOU should handle PIT today. Jake Woodford (PIT) has pitched 8 innings as a major leaguer in his young career. HOU is second in the league in H with 962. Woodford may have a tough day.

NYM should handle MIN today. Both teams have about the same quality bullpen, but Sean Manaea (NYM) is a better starter than David Festa (MIN). Festa has only played three games this year.

BAL should handle SD today. The best game should be between ATL and NYM. These are two outstanding teams with almost identical records.

Have you noticed that I often say so-and-so should handle COL today? COL just isn't having the best of seasons. The same goes for CWS. CWS and SEA just can't generate any hits. In fact, CWS is 0-10 for the last 10 games.

Conversely, BAL, CLE, PHI, LAD, and NYY lead the league.

Look for SF to handle COL today.

Bobby Witt (KC) is pulling ahead of the pack with 138 H. It's pretty amazing. Steven Kwan, who has 101 H, has an incredible .316 H-PA and a .401 OBP.

BOS should do well against COL today. Even though BOS has only a .280 PCT on away games, Ty Blach (COL) has 1.37 Hits per Inning.

NYM and BOS should handle MIA and COL today.

The All Star break is over, so let's see who the best teams are. PHI has the best record at 62-36. They have won .633 games, with an amazing .698 at home and .556 on the road. Next is BAL at 60-38. BAL winning percentage is .612. Their home percentage is .577, and they are winning .652 on the road.

The AL East is the toughest division this season with 265 W and 226 L.

Bobby Witt (KC) has the most hits at 131. Aaron Judge (NYY) has the most HR with 34 and 86 RBIs. Elly De La Cruz (CIN) has an amazing 47 SB.

SD, HOU, PHI, BAL, and LAD have the most hits, while NYY, BAL, LAD, ARI, and PHI have scored the most runs.

Chris Sale (ATL) has the best record at 13-3 on the pitching side. For those who have pitched more than 100 innings, Ronel Blanco (HOU) has .59 Hits per Inning. Luis Gil has .61 Hits per Inning.

From a team pitching perspective, the best teams are SEA, CLE, NYY, TEX, and ATL. They have the fewest hits. From a bullpen perspective, CLE's right-handers are 24-8, and MIL's left-handers are 14-3. From a starter perspective, NYY, PHI, and SEA have the lowest H per Inning for right-handers. (I still find it interesting that BOS, MIN, and SD don't have any left-hander starters in their rotation.) CWS and DET lead the league with the lowest H per Inning for lefties. (Remember that the innings pitched for lefties for these teams are about 25% of the righties.)

For today's matchups, you have to go with SF over COL.
